- Herman Miller Osso Chair

Compact, minimal, sculpted, the Osso chair for Mattiazzi begs to be touched. Designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec say the quality and "sensuality of the wood" makes the object. This chair makes any room it sits in. A high-technology system assembles the wood panels of the seat and back, creating strength to match their beauty. Available in black, blue, green, dark grey, pink, white, natural ash, natural maple, and natural oak.

A chair in which the wood—locally harvested, chemical-free—is the star, just as its designers intended. Osso, manufactured at the world-famous Mattiazzi factory in Italy, is fabricated with high-tech modeling equipment run on solar power. You could put an ORGANIC sticker on this sinuous seating and not be far off the mark.

Elegant and fun, the Nelson Pedestal Stool works equally well in casual spaces where multiple, easily rearranged seats are called for, and as a compact seat that can squeeze into a foyer or walk-in closet. Utilizing the same base design as the Pedestal Table, the stool is available in a broad selection of fabrics and four finishes. An original George Nelson design from the mid-1950s, the Nelson Pedestal Stool displays the elegant lines Nelson was known for. The base of the stool is the same as the base of Nelson’s Pedestal Tables and is available in a variety of finishes. And as an added benefit, the stools are manufactured with recyclable upholstery and aluminum.

Design Story

Embracing the unexpected

The Osso Chair is anything but conventional. Just what you’d expect from designers who created something called the Disintegrated Kitchen—the kitchen as a piece of furniture—as one of their first projects. French brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are known for innovation. Another of their projects that garnered a great deal of attention was the Lit Clos—the closed bed—a piece of furniture they designed to eliminate the need for a separate bedroom by providing an enclosed sleeping space as a single piece of furniture.

Designed for use

But their imaginative approach isn’t rooted in whimsy. Inspiration comes primarily from those who will be using their products. “When I’m designing a chair, I don’t think about the moon. I think about the people who are going to be sitting in it,” says Erwan.

Inspired by the past

The brothers, who have been working together since the late 1990s, do look to designers from the past to inspire their work—and it’s easy to imagine the genesis of the Osso Chair in the traditions they value most. “To me, contemporary design stands atop two massive columns: one was created by the American designers like Eames, who was so innovative in the 1940s and 1950s, and whose use of technology made such an incredible impact,” says Erwan. “And the other column is made up of the Italian designers of the 1970s and 1980s who created a whole new typology for modern living.”

Back to the basics

They describe working with the renowned Italian woodworking company Mattiazzi as being like working with an organic farm. They say they were especially impressed by the fact that the company’s equipment is all powered by solar energy and that the wood is harvested locally and is free of any kind of chemical treatments. “They came back to the basics, and this is precisely what piqued our interest and our fascination for the Mattiazzi family. As designers, we feel involved in supporting such valiant microstructures that are always on the edge.”

Invites touch

They wanted Osso to represent the fundamentals of what Mattiazzi is and what the company stands for. Their intention was to create a piece of furniture that exposed the sensuality of the wood and that would make you want to touch it, as well as sit in it.
