• DL envelopes also known as business envelopes or 110 x 220mm envelopes are one of the most commonly used business envelopes across offices and professional work places in the UK. The size of DL envelopes is 220mm in length and 110mm in height (8.66” x 4.33”). In regards of size, DL envelopes are often referred to as 1/3 A4 size as they can hold an A4 sheet folded twice creating 3 even parts; you can also fit a A5 sheet that is folded in half.

• One of the reasons for such popularity of DL envelopes is that they are ideal for posting one page documents which covers majority of correspondence that is carried out within professional environments. Since DL envelopes and their contents are fairly light in weight they are a great option in terms of postage costs.

• DL envelopes are available in two styles: wallet DL envelopes which have the opening on top of the long side of the envelope; the other style of DL envelopes is pocket DL envelopes which have the opening on the shorter side.

• Like most envelopes, DL envelopes 110 x 220mm are available in windowed and plain layout. Windowed DL envelopes allow printing the address details on the letter that you put in the envelope so that it is visible through transparent part of the envelope. This way you can save time and money on address labels. The other option is plain DL envelopes which are opaque throughout the whole surface and require putting the address details directly on it.

• Depending on your preferences you can choose between 3 types of sealing methods used in DL envelopes. If you are buying large quantities of DL envelopes that are going to be used over a long period of time, you might want to look at peel and seal DL envelopes. Such DL envelopes come with adhesive layer that is covered by a plastic strip to preserve the sealing quality and can be stored even for a couple of years. Peel and seal DL envelopes also provide an extremely strong bond which is sort of tamper evident as it is hard to open without tearing or cutting the paper. Gummed DL envelopes also can be stored for numerous months without losing any of the sealing quality. These DL envelopes require moistening the adhesive layer on the flap to activate it and then press it against the other flap to seal it. DL envelopes that use press and seal closure are convenient to use as they have adhesive layer on both flaps and you only need to press them against each other to create a strong bond. Press and seal DL envelopes have a shorter shelf life than other DL envelopes but it still means that you can store them up to 1 year without affecting the sealing quality.

• Since DL envelopes are mainly used for professional and business correspondence they come in a very limited choice of colours. The vast majority of DL envelopes come in white and there is some limited choice of brown DL envelopes. Premium ranges of DL envelopes are also available in more elegant colour options such as cream or vellum.
