- Herman Miller Envelope Chair
Upholstery wraps a welded tubular steel frame to create seat, sides, and back. Likewise, the Envelope chair wraps around the sitter. Ward Bennett designed this comfortable and comforting chair in 1966. It has been in production ever since. As right for public areas as it is for private spaces. The Envelope Chair has a timeless aesthetic. Your choice of metallic finish, textile, and leather options ensure that it complements any interior.
Design Story
Fascinatingly Simple All at once, Bennett’s Envelope Chair is inviting, comfortable, and beautifully simple. "My chairs are always pared down to the minimum: no tricks, nothing clever," Ward Bennett once said. "I have no interest in making chairs look like baseball gloves or hands. But I am interested in chairs that are comfortable to human bodies." Comfortable and Comforting Ward Bennett designed the comfortable and comforting Envelope Chair in 1966, a design that has been in production ever since. Its enduring qualities can be attributed to Bennett’s close attention to detail and a series of self-imposed questions. Does it work? Will it last? In the case of the Envelope Chair, decades later, the answer is clearly “yes.” Meaningful and Poetic When designing chairs—or any of his projects for that matter—Bennett’s desire was to make the form, the space, as meaningful and poetic as possible. “It is the volume that concerns me, the inside and the outside as they contain and support the human form,” said Bennett. The Envelope Chair is forthright in its purpose, offering a beautiful destination for comfort and support. |
